Faux Finishes
When it comes to faux finishing, with Homeworks Artistry the sky really is the limit.
Nothing enriches walls like a wonderful faux finish. Faux finishes are painted simulations of other materials. They are an imitation of a natural material like distressed wood, leather, metal or stones. Faux treatments are usually less expensive, and have other advantages, including durability, color uniformity, and availability.
Carla Schuchman creates custom finishes designed to enhance the environment you live in. From traditional to contemporary, elegant to eccentric, there is likely a custom finish that Homeworks Artistry can create for your project.

Decorative Art

ceilings
Carla uses the combined techniques of Faux Finishes and Trompe L'Oeil in her ceiling treatments. Painted ceilings are one of the most intriguing of canvases, dating back as far as the 17th century when they were widely seen adorning the palaces of Europe.
Now painted ceilings can adorn your palace. You'll be absolutely thrilled when the piece designed for your home or business enhances your new environment.
canvas paintings and prints
Demand is escalating for custom canvas paintings. Carla has been commissioned to paint portraits, well-known landscapes in South Carolina, and unique landscapes that have special meaning to her clients. Signed Giclee prints and limited edition prints are also available.
furniture
Have you felt frustrated trying to find the right piece of furniture, or the right finishes on your cabinetry, to best suit your home?
Custom-finished furniture and cabinetry is an affordable option. Carla has designed finishes using both Faux and Trompe L'Oeil techniques, to finish or re-finish furniture and cabinetry. The advantage to this approach is being able to decide exactly how you want your piece to look. Whether it is a distressed finish, using colors from your décor, or a hand-painted design, you can be sure it will be a one-of-a-kind piece that you will admire for generations to come.
murals and trompe l'oeil
A French term which means “trick the eye,” Trompe L'oeil is sometimes called illusionism. This unique style of painting gives the appearance of three-dimensional or photographic realism. It has flourished since The Renaissance, and can be playful or intellectually serious.
Murals are large paintings, most commonly created on expansive walls in private homes, as well as on public buildings. Carla strives to create a realism that fools the spectator’s eye into thinking they are looking at a genuine three-dimensional image. She recently completed a mastery training course, and will be continuing to pursue this passion in the years to come.

Pricing
You'll probably be surprised at the level of detail which occurs “behind the scenes” when Carla creates decorative art — whether a faux treatment or a custom-painted canvas.
- Consultation. Your first meeting (up to one hour) is free. This includes brainstorming, color analysis, composition and design. After the first hour, consultation time is billed at $75.00 per hour.
During the inital consultation, Carla will show you her portfolio, and provide you with references. She will measure the space to be worked, or discuss size of painting, and review theme, color scheme, design ideas, deadlines, budget, personal preferences, and the many creative possibilities available. She will then send you a preliminary estimate.
- Rendering and Design. A painting will only be as good as the initial study and drawing concept invested into it. It is vitally important to take the time and make sure that all reference material is collected and studied. This may include:
- Taking photographs, travel time to photograph areas in different light or atmosphere, researching art reference library for inspirations and ideas. It is always better to paint from life, so it may be necessary to set up a model to photograph with proper lighting so that the study of light and shadow will bring a more realistic look to the artwork.
- Making drawings and/or computer renderings for the work of art. At this stage there will be a $450.00 non-refundable retainer, which will be used for the studies, research and color rendering of up to 6 hours of time. On smaller less complicated projects this fee may be less. However, on larger, more complicated projects where models may need to be used and extensive research is necessary, the design time is billed at $100.00 per hour with a timeline estimate given. The initial rendering or sketch is the image the client will OK before the contract is signed. All questions will be answered at this time and any changes can be made before the actual painting begins. Additional preliminary design work or changes are free for up to two hours This procedure ensures that the client is serious and committed to the project, and it also protects Carla's time.
- Trompe L'Oeil, Murals, Custom Painted Canvases or any "artwork" created and applied to Furniture or Cabinetry are priced per project. Artwork is priced by the level of detail or complexity requested. If a reasonable budget is known beforehand, Carla can usually work within it.
- The artist holds the copyrights and right to reproduce any custom canvas painting for print.
- Payment. A 20% down payment is required to proceed with your project. A draw on the unpaid balance will be required each Friday, for work completed that week. The balance is due upon completion of project.
- For large-scale or multiple projects, the down payment may be adjusted. The down payment insures that the client is serious and has made a commitment.
- At this stage, sample boards may be produced (if requested), and the client will choose a finish. Sample boards remain the property of Homeworks Artistry.
- Other Considerations. Our pricing reflects these additional factors:
- What is the level of detail and complexity of the artwork or faux finish?
- Is the artwork a large piece (over 100 square feet), or something smaller?
- Are there portraits involved?
- Does the design require extensive research, models, and/or travel time?
- Does the client already have a design concept, and viable reference materials?
- Is the project a wall space, or a custom canvas? Is it on furniture or cabinetry, which will need to be sanded or refinished?
- What is the quality and stability of the surface to be finished? Does it need surface preparation, patching, priming, or a color base?
- Where is the surface located? Is it a stairwell, or a ceiling? Is scaffolding is needed, must it be custom-built?
- Will an option be to paint the mural work on canvas, and have it installed by a professional wallpaper hanger?
- Where is the site of the project? Is travel and hotel stay required?
- Contracts and Scheduling. After the client approves the rendering or sample board, Homeworks Artistry signs the contract, and schedules a starting time. All jobs are on a first-come, first-serve basis, and are only scheduled after the deposit is received. If you are on a deadline, please let us know this in the planning stage. We are sometimes booked months in advance.
Please contact Carla with any questions about your project.
